ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has traveled to Ethiopia to take part in the 38th Ordinary Session of the African Union (AU) Assembly, scheduled from February 14 to 16, 2025. The gathering, which brings together African heads of state, aims to address major continental issues, including economic cooperation, security, and climate resilience.
According to an Executive Mansion statement released on February 13, 2025, and signed by Presidential Press Secretary Atty. Kula Bonah Nyei Fofana, President Boakai’s trip stresses Liberia’s commitment to regional integration and policy coordination. This year’s summit centers on the theme, “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations,” highlighting the historical and economic concerns of African nations.
During the event, the Liberian leader is expected to advocate for policies that support quality education and workforce development, which he considers key to the country’s long-term economic stability. The administration has stressed the need for sustainable financing mechanisms that can drive growth while reducing Liberia’s reliance on foreign aid.
Traveling with President Boakai are key members of his government, including Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti, Minister of State Without Portfolio Mamaka Bility, and Economic Advisor Morley Kamara. Legislative representation includes Grand Bassa County Senator Gbehzohngar M. Findley and Representative Sekou Kanneh, who chairs the Executive Committee in the House of Representatives.
While Boakai’s presence at the summit signals Liberia’s engagement in regional affairs, concerns persist about the challenges awaiting him back home. His administration is under scrutiny for its response to corruption, particularly after suspending more than 400 officials for failing to declare their assets. Some critics argue that his focus should remain on addressing governance and economic inefficiencies rather than diplomatic engagements.
In his absence, Minister of State for Presidential Affairs Sylvester Grisgsby will handle key government functions, coordinating with Vice President Jeremiah Koung. President Boakai and his delegation are expected to return to Liberia on February 17, 2025.
