WORLD BIDS FAREWELL AS POPE FRANCIS IS LAID TO REST

Date:

ROME, ITALY – Beneath the somber skies of Rome, a chapter in the life of the Catholic Church closed on Saturday, April 26, 2025, as Pope Francis was laid to rest. Over 200,000 mourners filled the streets, their faces heavy with sorrow, their hearts lifted by the memory of a man who lived his faith with tenderness and courage.

The crowd stretched from St. Peter’s Square deep into the city, a living testament to a pontiff who touched the world not with grandeur, but with humility. As prayers rose into the morning air, it became clear that the legacy of Pope Francis, a servant of the poor and a champion of mercy, would endure far beyond his final resting place.

Later in the day, the Vatican confirmed that his coffin had been placed within the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, a church dear to him throughout his papacy. In a private and deeply moving ceremony, those closest to the late pope gathered to say their final goodbyes, far from the eyes of the world.

Inside the sacred basilica, lit by the gentle glow of candles, Cardinal Kevin Farrell performed the final blessing. As he sprinkled holy water over the coffin, the silence was profound, broken only by whispered prayers and quiet weeping from those who loved and served him most faithfully.

The Vatican has now entered the period of Novemdiales, nine days of mourning and remembrance, when the world will reflect on a life spent in tireless service to the Gospel. Across continents and oceans, churches will ring their bells and the faithful will gather to honor the man who urged them to see Christ in the faces of the forgotten.

The College of Cardinals will soon be summoned to Rome, and within twenty days, a new leader will be chosen to guide the world’s 1.3 billion Catholics. Yet for now, there is only mourning and gratitude for a pope who belonged to all, regardless of creed, nation, or station in life.

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, he rose from the streets of Buenos Aires to the highest office of the Church, yet never forgot the simple dignity of every human soul. His papacy was a song of compassion, a call to break down walls and build bridges of love and understanding.

Throughout the world, Pope Francis’ voice became a moral compass during troubled times. Whether he was comforting refugees, defending the Earth, or challenging the comfortable to remember the suffering, he lived the Gospel not in words alone, but in action.

As his coffin was lowered into its final resting place, the bells of Rome tolled not only in mourning but in thanksgiving for a life that showed what true greatness means: to serve, to forgive, to love.

As dusk fell over the Eternal City, and the candles flickered against the ancient stones, the spirit of Pope Francis remained, a quiet, enduring flame in the heart of a grieving world.
