MONROVIA – The voice of the Catholic Church in Liberia represents hundred of thousands voices in Liberia which is a major achievement for the attainment of justice for victims of the Liberian Civil War. The call by the Catholic Church brings to two major voices in one week calling on the Government to implement the TRC Recommendations. The Lord Mayor of the City of Monrovia was the first person of essence in the Weah-CDC led government to make his voice known.
The Bishops of the Catholic Church in Liberia are calling on the Government of Pres. George Weah to inaugurate a national dialogue for the possible establishment of a War and Economic Crimes Court and the full implementation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Recommendation. The expressed concerns of the Catholic Bishops were issued in a communique after the end of a week long Plenary Assembly held in Maryland, Harper City.
If the Weah-CDC led government doesn’t act promptly and appropriately to inaugurate some level of credible international dialog with the Office of the Secretary General of the United Nations through the UN Special Representative Office in Monrovia, the Office of the Secretary of State the the Ambassador of the United States Embassy in Monrovia and the European Union Representative in Monrovia, the Weah-CDC led government is doomed.
Now that the issue of the establishment of a War and Economic Crimes Court has taken center stage in the Liberian National debate, the United States, United Nations and the European Union have is to shortly institute a Travel Ban and Assets Freeze regime on the Republic of Liberia.
The sanctions on the Weah-CDC government that is long overdue will have some 200 (two hundred names) of both pass and current government officials headed by His Excellency George Manner Weah. Once the United Nations is involved in sanctions regime, the database will be shared with all members states of the UN preventing those sanctioned to leave Liberia and travel next doors to Guinea, Ivory Coast or Sierra Leona.
The predominant views expressed by some of Weah’s inner circles is that the President of the Republic of Liberia is not approachable and easily distracted. He prefers to be on Facebook or playing with his phone during a major conversation. He doesn’t appreciate disagreement or descending views on matters of State and always want to have the dominant view in everything. His people are afraid of having a heart to heart or man to man conversations with the President because once he turns against you, you are kicked out of the inner circle. Is seems that none of the President’s men want to risk their fate.
There is a Liberian adage that says “the child that cannot hear will feel”, so be it with Pres. Weah who inner circles is now spilling the beans to the International Comity and the War and Economic Crimes folks in a desperate mood to save their hinds.
It can be recalled that similar sanctions regime was placed on the Taylor-NPP led government without any prior notice. The sanctions regime ruined the economy of Liberia to the extent that the entire national budget under Pres. Taylor that was making strives dropped from over US$250m (two hundred and fifty millions) to that of US$30m (thirty millions). The economy was ruined, civil servants went without pay for months, turning the population against Liberia most popular Presidential ever. Later, Charlie Taylor was arrested and sentenced for crimes committed against humanity in Sierra Lonena and is currently still behind bars.
It is not clear at to the current names that constitute the sanctions list. The drifters of the sanctions are keeping the list close to their chest but have leaked information surrounding the pending process. The leak is probably for the Weah-CDC led government to take appropriate steps in making sure that this pending heavy burden is taken off of the Liberian people shoulders.
