LIBERIA’S DEMOCRATIC JOURNEY: STRIDES MADE, BUT CONCERNS OF CORRUPTION AND CRIMINALITY THREATEN PROGRESS

A Commentary By Wandah L. Jah

Liberia has undoubtedly made significant strides in the democratic process, not only within Africa but also on a global scale. The country has successfully transitioned from one government to another in a non-violent manner, setting an example for other nations. However, there are legitimate concerns regarding the individuals being elected to positions of power.

In recent years, the national Legislature of Liberia has become a sanctuary for individuals with questionable backgrounds. Convicts, sanctioned individuals, suspected war criminals, and those suspected of economic crimes or corruption have found their way into the highest levels of government. This unfortunate trend threatens to undermine the progress made in the democratic front.

While Liberia may be making history in terms of democratic transition, it is essential to acknowledge that true progress cannot be achieved when the same cycle of crooks, thieves, and corrupt individuals continues to prevail. It is disheartening to see that some individuals suspected of embezzling public funds have managed to enter the national legislature, using the stolen money to secure their positions.

Addressing this issue is crucial, as it represents a significant obstacle to Liberia’s democratic development. Many analysts are advocating for radical change in order to break this cycle of corruption and ensure that only individuals with integrity and a genuine commitment to public service are elected to positions of power. By carefully examining and addressing this problem, Liberia can truly move forward and make substantial progress in its democratic journey.
