LIBERIA: PUL WELCOMES THE PASSAGE OF THE RESOLUTION TO ESTABLISH WAR AND ECONOMIC CRIMES COURT

Date:

MONROVIAThe Press Union of Liberia welcomed the passage of the resolution to establish the War and Economic Crimes Court in Liberia.

The House of Representatives of the 55th National Legislature, on Tuesday, March 5,  2024, passed a resolution for the establishment of the long-awaited War and Economic Crimes Court in the country.

According to the PUL, the court’s formation is a good first step in regaining the nation’s respect for human rights and ending the culture of impunity.

The Union, represented by its Acting President Mr. Akoi Baysah, stated in a release on Thursday, March 7, 2024, that the War and Economic Crimes Court will eventually assist in putting the nation on the correct course and serve as a beacon of hope for victims of atrocious acts committed during Liberia’s civil upheaval.

Baysah noted that “human dignity, respect for the rule of law, and justice will be restored with a strong message of deterrence.”

The Press Union of Liberia is grateful to all civil society organizations and individuals who have persevered over the years  to make this historic accomplishment possible.

The Union rejoices in the impending prosecution of individuals who have committed crimes against humanity.

Meanwhile, the PUL is urging the House of Senate to concur with the House of Representatives on the resolution to establish the War and Economic Crimes Court in Liberia.
