POLITICAL COMMENTATOR CRITIQUES PRESIDENT BOAKAI’S RESPONSE TO SUPREME COURT RULING

Date:

MONROVIA, LIBERIA  – Liberian political commentator Wantoe Teah Wantoe has critically analyzed President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s press statement, released today by his Press Secretary Kula Fofana. The statement addressed the Supreme Court’s ruling on Wednesday, April 24, which went against the President’s nominations for tenure positions. Wantoe Teah Wantoe argues that the President’s acceptance of the ruling comes across as insincere and obligatory rather than genuine.

President Boakai’s statement, which welcomed the Supreme Court’s decisions on tenure officials, emphasized his commitment to upholding the rule of law. He declared his intention to honor the court’s ruling, stating that strict adherence to the rule of law is crucial for strengthening institutions and building a vibrant democracy.

However, Wantoe Teah Wantoe points out the irony in President Boakai’s statement, questioning what other option the President had but to respect the Supreme Court’s decision. According to Articles 65 and 66 of the Liberian Constitution, the Supreme Court is the final arbiter of constitutional issues, and its judgments are binding and not subject to appeal.

The political commentator argues that President Boakai’s compliance with the Supreme Court’s ruling was not an act of virtue but an obligation. Wantoe Teah Wantoe emphasizes that real leadership should involve adhering to laws and principles without needing reminders from judicial bodies.

Furthermore, Wantoe Teah Wantoe highlights instances where President Boakai has not followed the rule of law, such as his nominations for tenure positions without adhering to established rules. The commentator also mentions the firing of Cllr. Carmerna Cephas Yeke, Deputy Director General of NASSCORP, due to her refusal to comply with an alleged takeover letter that did not comply with the law.

President Boakai’s decision to dismiss Cllr. Yeke for “gross insubordination” despite her adherence to legitimate procedures raises questions about his commitment to the rule of law and ethical governance.

Wantoe Teah Wantoe concludes by applauding the Supreme Court’s decisions while questioning President Boakai’s adherence to the principles of justice and integrity. The commentator emphasizes the importance of genuine commitment to the rule of law and ethical leadership in governance.
