PRESIDENT BOAKAI SIGNS EXECUTIVE ORDER ESTABLISHING WAR AND ECONOMIC CRIMES COURT FOR LIBERIA

Date:

On Thursday, May 2, 2024, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai signed and issued Executive Order #131, establishing the office of a War and Economic Crimes Court for Liberia. The signing ceremony was attended by government officials, members of the justice and peace advocacy community, the interfaith community, and various victims of Liberia’s civil conflicts.

During the signing, President Boakai emphasized the importance of the court in bringing justice and closure to the scars of Liberia’s tragic civil conflicts, which lasted for more than fourteen years. He expressed gratitude to the National Legislature for its historic move in passing a resolution urging the establishment of the court and commended the efforts of those who have advocated for justice and peace in Liberia.

President Boakai highlighted the need for unity in addressing the causes and effects of the violence that plagued Liberia, stating that justice and healing are essential for peace and harmony to prevail. He underscored the government’s commitment to the rule of law and its firm stand against impunity, noting that the establishment of the court is a significant step towards restoring respectability and integrity to Liberia.

In closing, President Boakai called on all Liberians to support the establishment of the court, emphasizing that it is time to focus on building a reconciled and united nation. He urged everyone to embrace the motto of “Think Liberia, Love Liberia, and Build Liberia,” and to work towards a future free from the shadows of the past.
