LIBERIAN STATESMAN AND GEOLOGIST CLETUS WOTORSON PASSES AWAY AT 87

Date:

MONROVIA – Cletus Segbe Wotorson, a prominent Liberian politician and assistant professor emeritus of Geology at the University of Liberia, has passed away at the age of 87. He died on Monday, August 12, 2024. Wotorson was a distinguished statesman and former Senator of Grand Kru County, remembered for his significant contributions to both Liberia’s political landscape and academic community.

Wotorson’s political career reached a peak when he was elected Senate Pro-Tempore on March 26, 2009, after defeating fellow Senator Gbehzohngar Milton Findley. He held this influential position until 2012. Prior to his time in the Senate, Wotorson served as Minister of Lands and Mines from 1978 to 1980 and later as CEO of the Liberia Petroleum Refining Company (LPRC) from 1980 to 1983.

In addition to his roles in government, Wotorson played a key part in Liberia’s 1997 presidential election as the standard bearer of the Alliance of Political Parties (LAP-LUP). Though he came fourth out of 13 candidates, securing 2.57% of the vote (15,969 votes out of 621,880), his candidacy highlighted his dedication to Liberia’s democratic process.

Beyond politics, Wotorson was a respected academic, with a deep expertise in Geology that informed his work and teachings at the University of Liberia. His contributions to both academia and public service have left an enduring legacy.

More details on his life and legacy will follow.
