NPHIL DENIES REPORTS OF MPOX CASES IN SINOE COUNTY, URGES MEDIA TO VERIFY INFORMATION

Date:

MONROVIA, LIBERIA – The National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) has refuted claims circulating in the media regarding the confirmation of Mpox cases in Sinoe County. In a media alert issued today, Tuesday, August 27, 2024, NPHIL categorically stated that there are no confirmed cases of Mpox in the county.

The alert clarified that recent reports suggesting six confirmed Mpox cases in Sinoe County are entirely false. “NPHIL wishes to inform the public that information circulating about the confirmation of six (6) Mpox cases in Sinoe County is not true,” the statement emphasized.

While addressing the misinformation, NPHIL acknowledged the essential role of the media in raising awareness and preventing the spread of diseases such as Mpox. However, the institute also stressed the importance of accurate reporting and urged media outlets to verify their information with official sources.

“NPHIL welcomes the collaboration of the media in its awareness to stop and prevent the spread of Mpox in Liberia. We also wish to remind the press that the Director-General, Dr. Dougbeh Chris Nyan, is the official spokesperson of the institute,” the alert stated.

NPHIL concluded by encouraging media institutions to double-check their sources and seek confirmation directly from the institute to ensure the dissemination of accurate and reliable information.

As Mpox remains a public health concern, NPHIL’s prompt response to the false reports highlights its commitment to providing accurate information and protecting public health in Liberia. The institute continues to monitor the situation closely and urges the public to stay informed through official channels.
