NPHIL INTENSIFIES BORDER SURVEILLANCE IN LOFA AS MPOX CASES RISE

LOFA COUNTY – The National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) has intensified its nationwide border surveillance campaign in response to the growing number of Mpox cases in the country.

In a press release issued on Friday, May 23, 2025, NPHIL confirmed that its team, led by Director General Dr. Dougbeh Chris Nyan, is currently in Lofa County. The mission, part of the institute’s broader public health strategy, focuses on curbing the spread of Mpox through enhanced monitoring and preventative actions at key entry points.

According to field reports, the NPHIL delegation is assessing border towns along Liberia’s frontiers with Sierra Leone and Guinea. Special attention is being given to the Medicorma and Sorlumba entry points, which are considered critical transit routes.

The surveillance tour aims to strengthen public health readiness, ensure proper screening protocols are in place, and support local health teams with the necessary tools to manage potential outbreaks.

Speaking to reporters during the visit, Dr. Nyan disclosed that Liberia has recorded thirty-five confirmed cases of Mpox. Of those infected, seventy-seven individuals have recovered, and the country has reported no fatalities so far.

Dr. Nyan emphasized the importance of vigilance, community engagement, and regional cooperation in preventing further transmission of the disease. He reaffirmed NPHIL’s commitment to deploying resources and expertise to safeguard public health, especially in high-risk border communities.
