MONROVIA – Tensions are rising as an additional 40 individuals came forward today, Wednesday, June 5th, to the Liberia National Police (LNP) headquarters on Capitol Hill, Monrovia, accusing Reverend M. Emmanuel Nimely of fraudulent activities. This brings the total number of complainants against the religious advisor to former President George M. Weah to 130.
Reverend Nimely, who is the current Pastor of the Forkay-klon Family Church, was arrested on June 2, 2024, in the Dwazon Community along Roberts International Airport Highway. The arrest followed a series of complaints filed by victims who allege that he duped them by promising to secure Australian visas in exchange for money.
The LNP, in a press release dated June 3, 2024, confirmed that Reverend Nimely is under investigation for theft by deception, receiving money under false pretenses, visa fraud, and suspected human trafficking. According to preliminary investigations, in early August 2023, Reverend Nimely allegedly collected $970 each from 90 individuals, totaling $87,300. He purportedly assured them that the money would cover the cost of attending a church conference in Australia.
The number of complaints has steadily increased, with the latest group of 40 individuals adding to the allegations against Reverend Nimely. These complainants reported to the LNP headquarters, asserting that they, too, were deceived by the promises of the man of God.
Despite the mounting accusations, Reverend Nimely has publicly denied any wrongdoing. Speaking on June 3, 2024, while being escorted by police at the LNP headquarters, he stated, “All the allegations against me are false and misleading; I have all documents in my possession.”
The victims, who had hoped to secure Australian visas through Reverend Nimely’s assistance, paid the amounts in good faith. When the promised visas failed to materialize, suspicions grew, leading to formal complaints against him.
The case has garnered significant attention due to Reverend Nimely’s high-profile role as a religious advisor during George Weah’s presidency. As the investigation continues, the LNP has pledged to conduct a thorough and transparent inquiry. Reverend Nimely remains in police custody and is expected to be forwarded to court upon the conclusion of the investigation.
This situation underscores the importance of vigilance and accountability within country, particularly involving trusted public figures. The LNP’s investigation aims to uncover the truth and provide justice for all affected individuals.
