MONROVIA, LIBERIA – Lawyers representing Gbarpolu County Senator Amara Mohamed Konneh have given Deputy Information Minister for Press and Public Affairs Daniel O. Sando 48 hours to retract allegations that the senator helped rig Liberia’s 2017 presidential election in favor of former President George Weah and the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC).
In a letter dated August 18, 2026, Toun-Ya Legal Chambers accused Sando of making false and defamatory statements about Konneh, arguing that the allegations attributed serious criminal conduct to their client and damaged his public reputation.
The lawyers said they were informed that Sando, through public and social media platforms and press commentary on or around August 11 and 12, alleged that Konneh “connived and systematically rigged” the 2017 presidential election to facilitate Weah’s victory and bring the CDC to power.
Toun-Ya Legal Chambers categorically rejected the allegation, describing it as untrue and asserting that it has caused reputational harm to the senator.
The legal team argued that allegations suggesting Konneh participated in manipulating a national election amount to accusations of serious criminal conduct under Liberian law.
“Not only is your statement in reference entirely without an iota of true, but this allegation imputes profoundly serious crimes to our client,” the lawyers said in their letter to Sando.
The lawyers further maintained that defamatory statements can damage an individual’s reputation and standing in society when they are false and expose the person to public discredit.
Despite its rejection of the allegations, the law firm said it was initially seeking an amicable resolution rather than immediately pursuing litigation.
It therefore demanded that Sando publicly retract the accusations within 48 hours of receiving the letter.
The lawyers warned that failure to comply with the demand could result in further legal action.
Konneh, a former Minister of Finance and Development Planning, currently represents Gbarpolu County in the Liberian Senate.
The letter was signed by Counsellor-at-Law Jonathan T. Massaquoi and Senior Counsellor Kabineh M. Ja’neh of Toun-Ya Legal Consultancy and Arbitration Chambers, LLC.
As of publication, Sando had not publicly responded to the lawyers’ demand.
