MONROVIA – Political leader of the Citizens Movement for Change (CMC), Rep. Musa Hassan Bility, has strongly rejected claims that he is promoting an Islamist agenda, describing such allegations as “false, malicious, and dangerous,” following a backlash over remarks he made during a Muslim community gathering in Manchester, United Kingdom.
In an official statement issued on Monday, Bility said his comments, delivered at the induction of new Muslim leaders and a fundraising event for a community center, were deliberately taken out of context by individuals seeking to exploit religion for political gain.
“I expressed deep respect for the liberal and peaceful values of Islam,” Bility stated. “I encouraged the Muslim community in Liberia to continue advancing their faith in ways that foster understanding and coexistence, just as Christian institutions have done through churches and schools.”
Bility, who has long been known for his interfaith family life, referenced his Christian education and 28-year marriage to his Christian wife as testament to his commitment to religious tolerance. He emphasized that the community center being developed in Manchester should welcome all Liberians, regardless of their religious background.
“It is deeply troubling that a portion of my message has been taken out of context by those determined to keep Liberia divided and distracted,” he said. “Their desperate attempt to brand me as an Islamist does not represent who I am or what I stand for.”
Bility pointed to his professional and political record as further evidence of his inclusive values, noting that the vast majority of his staff and colleagues are Christians. He stressed that his businesses, political efforts, and public service have always been rooted in mutual respect and coexistence.
Describing the controversy as a “calculated distraction,” Bility said it was an attempt to divert attention from the pressing challenges facing Liberians, such as the rising cost of living and the decline of public services.
“To use religion as a political weapon in such trying times is not only disingenuous, it is dangerous,” he warned. “Let us rise above desperation and deceit, and stay focused on what truly matters: building a just, tolerant, and prosperous Liberia for all.”
Bility urged Liberians to watch the full video of his Manchester speech to better understand the spirit and context of his remarks.
