CAPITOL HILL, MONROVIA – The President Pro Tempore of the Liberian Senate, Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence on Tuesday, March 24, 2026 officially announced the adjournment of the Senate for its first quarter legislative break, while assuring the nation that lawmakers remain fully engaged amid mounting national and international concerns.
Addressing fellow senators, staff, members of the press, and the Liberian public, Karnga-Lawrence emphasized that the break, marking the First Legislative Recess of the Third Session of the 55th National Legislature, does not in any way reduce the Senate’s constitutional responsibility to respond to issues affecting the country.
She stressed that despite the recess, the Senate remains vigilant and proactive, particularly as Liberia faces growing tensions along its border with neighboring Guinea. According to her, such developments require careful handling to protect both national sovereignty and the livelihoods of citizens residing in border communities.
The Senate, she noted, is treating the situation with utmost seriousness, warning that unresolved border disputes could have far-reaching consequences if not addressed through diplomacy and firm engagement. In this regard, she reaffirmed the Legislature’s full support to the Executive Branch in pursuing peaceful dialogue.
Karnga-Lawrence reiterated Liberia’s longstanding commitment to regional peace, cooperation, and respect for international boundaries, expressing confidence that ongoing diplomatic efforts will reflect these core principles.
She also used the occasion to commend President Joseph Nyuma Boakai for his recent engagement with the Senate, describing the interaction as a demonstration of strong democratic governance and effective coordination between branches of government during critical moments.
Beyond security concerns, the Senate Pro Tempore highlighted the impact of global developments on Liberia’s fragile economy. She pointed specifically to the ongoing crisis in the Middle East, noting its ripple effects on fuel prices, food supply, and the cost of essential goods in import-dependent economies like Liberia.
According to her, these global shocks are already placing pressure on the cost of living, underscoring the need for continuous legislative oversight even during recess. She disclosed that key Senate committees, including Defense, Ways and Means, and Internal Affairs, have been mandated to remain fully operational throughout the break.
These committees, she explained, will work closely with the Executive Branch to monitor the border situation, assess economic trends, and ensure that government responses remain timely and effective in addressing emerging challenges.
In a firm declaration, Karnga-Lawrence assured that the Senate stands ready to reconvene at any time should the situation demand urgent legislative intervention. She emphasized that such action would be taken without imposing additional financial strain on the government, reflecting the Senate’s awareness of the country’s fiscal realities.
