STAND REJECTS WEEDOR APPOINTMENT AS NEC ACTING CHAIR, WARNS OF THREAT TO 2029 ELECTIONS CREDIBILITY

MONROVIA – The Solidarity and Trust for a New Day (STAND) has strongly rejected the appointment of Jonathan K. Weedor as Acting Chairman of Liberia’s National Elections Commission (NEC), calling for its immediate withdrawal over what it describes as serious threats to public trust and electoral integrity. In a firm statement issued on April 1, 2026, STAND cautioned that the decision risks undermining confidence in the country’s democratic processes ahead of the 2029 General and Presidential Elections.

STAND Chairman, Mulbah K. Morlu Jr., emphasized that public confidence remains the bedrock of any credible democratic system, warning that such trust must never be sacrificed for political convenience. According to him, the appointment has already triggered widespread concern and growing skepticism among citizens and stakeholders.

“Public confidence is the cornerstone of democratic elections and must never be compromised,” Morlu asserted. “Elections must not only be free and fair, but they must also be seen as such by the people.” He added that any individual appointed to lead the NEC must embody neutrality, independence, and the ability to command broad-based trust across the political spectrum.

The STAND Chairman argued that the current appointment by President Joseph Boakai fails to meet these critical standards, instead fueling public debate and suspicion about the integrity of future electoral processes. He warned that such perceptions, if left unaddressed, could erode the legitimacy of election outcomes before they even occur.

Central to STAND’s rejection is what it describes as a “clear and veritable conflict of interest” surrounding Weedor’s alleged prior involvement in activities linked to President Boakai’s electoral process. Morlu pointed out that widely circulated public information suggests Weedor may have played roles connected to the announcement of election results favorable to the current administration.

“Regardless of the legal or procedural context, such prior political involvement creates a compelling perception of bias,” Morlu stated. “In democratic governance, perception is as important as process. The NEC must not only be neutral, it must be seen as neutral by all.”

He warned that allowing Weedor to remain in the position could preemptively discredit the outcome of the 2029 elections, as citizens may begin to perceive results as influenced or predetermined. According to STAND, such a scenario poses a direct threat to national stability, as disputed elections often trigger unrest and weaken democratic institutions.

Morlu further stressed that while the President holds constitutional authority to make appointments to the NEC, such powers must be exercised with caution and a clear commitment to strengthening democratic governance. He argued that any decision that raises doubts about the neutrality of the electoral body undermines the very foundation of Liberia’s democracy.

“The credibility of Liberia’s democracy and the stability of the Republic must always take precedence over political considerations,” Morlu declared, urging the government to reconsider the implications of the appointment.

STAND is therefore calling on President Boakai to act in what it describes as the “supreme interest of the nation” by immediately withdrawing Weedor’s appointment. The group maintains that such a move is necessary to preserve public trust, safeguard electoral credibility, and ensure peaceful democratic processes.

Concluding his statement, Morlu underscored that the future of Liberia’s democracy hinges on the confidence of its people. “That trust must be protected, defended, and upheld without compromise,” he said, warning that failure to do so could have far-reaching consequences for the country’s democratic trajectory.
