SUPREME COURT TO DELIBERATE ON CONSTITUTIONAL DISPUTE WITHIN THE LEGISLATURE

Date:

MONROVIA, LIBERIA – The Supreme Court of Liberia is set to address a critical constitutional matter on March 26, 2025, when it convenes to hear a Bill of Information filed by Speaker J. Fonati Koffa. The case, which has captured attention, stems from ongoing disputes within the 55th National Legislature, notably concerning the legitimacy of leadership and alleged procedural misconduct within the House of Representatives.

Speaker Koffa’s legal team has called for judicial intervention, claiming that there have been violations of constitutional protocols and legislative procedures that are undermining the functioning of the House. These allegations have heightened tensions among lawmakers, and Koffa’s move to seek a ruling from the Supreme Court is seen as an attempt to resolve a long-standing leadership crisis. The Bill of Information specifically calls for the Court’s intervention to clarify the legality of the actions taken by certain members of the legislature, including the supposed actions of Representative Richard N. Koon, who has been recognized by some as the Speaker, and Representative Thomas Fallah, the Deputy Speaker.

The Supreme Court’s decision to hear the case will provide a legal platform for the conflicting factions within the House of Representatives to present their positions. The hearing, scheduled for 11:00 AM, is expected to address broader questions about the constitutional authority and legitimacy of the ongoing disputes. This development has significant implications for the leadership structure within the legislature, and the Court’s ruling could ultimately determine the future of the legislature’s governance.

In a formal communication from the Supreme Court, all parties involved, including their legal representatives, have been summoned to present their arguments on the specified date. The legal community and political observers are eagerly awaiting the outcome, which could have lasting effects on the stability of the legislative body and the overall governance of Liberia.
