PRESIDENT BOAKAI SUSPENDS LTA COMMISSIONERS AMID ALLEGATIONS OF FINANCIAL MISCONDUCT

Date:

MONROVIA, LIBERIA – In the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s rulings against President Boakai’s nominations to several tenure positions, President Boakai has taken swift action by suspending the Commissioners of the Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA).

In a press release issued today and signed by President Boakai’s Press Secretary, Kula Bonah Nyei Fofana, it was announced that Madam Edwina C. Zackpah, Mr. Israel Akinsanya, Mr. Zotawon D. Titus, Mr. James Gbarwea, and Mr. Osborne K. Diggs, Chairperson and Commissioners of the LTA, have been suspended. The suspension comes in light of allegations of questionable financial transactions and other malpractices at the Authority.

President Boakai has called for a comprehensive audit of the LTA by the General Auditing Commission (GAC) to investigate these allegations thoroughly. He has urged the suspended officials to cooperate fully with the GAC during the investigation process.

Expressing confidence in the investigation, President Boakai stated that it would reveal any financial impropriety and help identify corrective measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.

The LTA plays a vital role in regulating the telecommunications sector in Liberia, and as such, the institution must uphold high standards of integrity and accountability in fulfilling its mandate.

The suspension of the Chairperson and Commissioners underscores the President’s commitment to ensuring that the LTA operates in the best interests of the Liberian people.

President Boakai reiterated the government’s dedication to promoting transparency and accountability across all sectors. He urged all public officials to maintain the highest standards of integrity and accountability in carrying out their duties to the Liberian people.

It is worth noting that on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, the Supreme Court ruled against President Boakai’s nominations in several tenure cases, citing procedural errors. The rulings affected appointments to key institutions such as the Liberia National Lottery Authority (NLA), Governance Commission (GC), National Identification Registry (NIR), and Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA). As a result, the Court ordered the withdrawal of all nominees appointed by President Boakai to these organizations.
