DEPUTY CHIEF CLERK COMMICKS CHEA DIES AFTER COLLAPSING DURING HOUSE SESSION

MONROVIA – The House of Representatives has confirmed, with deep sorrow and profound regret, the death of its Deputy Chief Clerk, Mr. C. Commicks Chea Sr., affectionately known as “DCC.” He passed away at 2:00 a.m. on Sunday, June 1, 2025, at the St. Joseph Catholic Hospital in Congo Town, following a brief illness. His death comes just days after he collapsed in his office shortly after attending a legislative session on Thursday, May 30.

According to the official statement from the House, Chea was actively performing his duties when he suddenly fell ill. After participating in the May 30 plenary session, he returned to his office where he collapsed. He was immediately rushed to the hospital and remained under medical care until his passing.

A veteran of Liberia’s legislative system, Mr. Chea was praised for his professionalism, humility, and deep understanding of parliamentary affairs. He served as a Senior Stenographer during the 54th Legislature before being elected Deputy Chief Clerk in the 55th Legislature, a position he held with honor and integrity.

During a recent period of political turbulence at the Capitol, Chea played a stabilizing role by aligning with the Majority Bloc to keep the Secretariat operational. His efforts ensured that the procedural activities of the House continued, even in the absence of his superior, Chief Clerk Madam Mildred Sayon, who was reportedly ill at the time.

House Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon, in a statement posted on the official page of the Legislature, expressed deep sorrow over Chea’s passing:

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Mr. Comicks Chea Sr., Deputy Chief Clerk of the House of Representatives. Mr. Chea was a dedicated and humble public servant whose years of service greatly contributed to the work of the Legislature.

On behalf of the House of Representatives, I extend heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues, and loved ones. His memory and contributions will forever be cherished.

May his soul rest in perfect peace.”

Colleagues affectionately referred to Chea as “Oldman,” a testament to his long-standing service and respected status within the Capitol Building. His calm demeanor and command of legislative processes made him a valued mentor and reliable steward of House affairs.

The House of Representatives noted that details of funeral arrangements and other homegoing activities will be announced in consultation with the bereaved family.
