PUL URGES PUBLICATION OF TRANSPARENT CAMPAIGN SCHEDULES AND NONVIOLENT POLITICAL DISCOURSE

Date:

MONROVIA – In response to the recent unfortunate incident of political violence between the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) and the Unity Party, (UP) the Press Union of Liberia (PUL) expresses its strong condemnation. The clash, which occurred on Thursday within the VAMOMA, James Springs Payne Airport Community, resulted in injuries sustained by at least four individuals, further highlighting the urgent need for a peaceful electoral environment.

The Press Union of Liberia calls upon the Coalition for Democratic Change and the Unity Party to fully uphold the principles outlined in the Farmington Declaration. This essential declaration emphasizes the paramount significance of fostering a tranquil democratic process and has garnered unwavering support from a diverse array of national and international stakeholders.

Addressing this concerning trend, the Press Union of Liberia firmly urges both parties to heed the call for restraint and engage in respectful and constructive discourse. The Union emphasizes the importance of promoting a violence-free electoral landscape to ensure the well-being of citizens and the integrity of the democratic process.

Furthermore, the Union earnestly appeals to the National Election Commission (NEC) to promptly release comprehensive schedules for political campaigns. These schedules, as previously approved by the NEC to guide the designated campaign period, are crucial for maintaining transparency, fairness and end violence in the electoral process.

By promptly publishing these schedules, the Press Union is confident that the potential for clashes, as witnessed in the regrettable incident at VAMOMA within the James Springs Payne Community, can be significantly reduced and avoided. Such proactive steps will contribute to a safer, create more inclusive political environment, fostering the democratic values that Liberia upholds and signal sufficient public notice.

The Press Union of Liberia is calling upon all stakeholders, political parties, and citizens to collectively work towards a harmonious and violence-free electoral process.
