A Patriot’s Diary
with Ekena Nyankun Juahgbe-Droh Wesley
Liberians are panting for peace. In the meantime, stability and lawlessness abound. A group of people entrusted with state power suddenly became power-drunk. In their drunkenness, the nation is trouncing in misery. It is as though there is no government. Is there one? That does not seem to be the case though. In the reckoning of the ruling party’s ardent zealots, a government truly exists; not for the people, but for the ego of the vampires who have inherited state power.
Why did Liberians elect a group of folks who don’t give a damn about them? Some would say it is the beauty of democracy. Hmm, could it be power-grab democracy for some? But the people had a list of candidates to choose from. Amid their best bet; the people chose a man who was elected as senator but did not say a word throughout his stay in the senate. You cannot have your cake and eat it, folks.
When some five high-profiled auditors were mysteriously murdered, we found no answers. Mind you, the culprits are out and about enjoying freedom while families of the victims continue to mourn. Their families continue to grieve for justice. Would it ever come by? Predictably, justice will not be realized in George Weah’s criminal empire. Our critics would grossly disagree. Such is the trapping of fanatical craze amid misguided party-incensed narrow-mindedness. Are we surprised? Party Chair Mulbah Morlu, let the cat out of the bag. Morlu told Iberians, the manner of untrustworthy character Weah is in content and form.
Amid an aura of hopelessness, state-sponsored thievery, intolerance and incompetence, poverty-stricken Liberians continue to bear the brunt of Liberia’s current leadership madness. Like Somalia and Haiti; Weah’s Liberia has been reduced to a militia-controlled ungovernable society.
Although former Minister McGill is no longer calling the shots; at least amid the disgrace the Americans visited on the small West African nation, he still parades Liberia with his Porcupine warriors in the name of a senatorial ambition for Margibi County. But it is the people of Margibi who will decide on election day provided the National Election Commission shamelessly confirms it is a partisan organization.
At Monrovia City Hall, Jefferson Koijee insanely maintains another militia base, which is construed to mean ‘Monrovia City Police. Lest we forget, it was the same Koijee who was publicly brandishing pistols and machetes during the 2018 bi-elections in District 15, Monrovia County. Koijee continues to remain in the good graces of President Weah despite glaring fingers being pointed at him in the face of spates of mysterious deaths and violent cum dreaded escapades as it were.
About two weeks ago, the former chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), Cllr. Jerome Verdier accused Jefferson Koijee as a grotesque mastermind of a recent cowardly attack on the home of the former Chief Justice and Senator, Cllr. Gloria Musu-Scott, which led to one fatal death and another ghastly wounded.
In what appears to be a barefaced lie, coupled with outright guilt, Koijee has set the stage for a wild goose chase after shadows. Like McGill, who found solace in mobilizing ex-rebel generals in an orgy of intimidation tactics; Jefferson Koijee has similarly found favor in recruiting former notorious rebel killers into the Monrovia City Police that has become a shield for the perpetuation of heinous crimes and state-sponsored gangsterism.
In the hopelessness of the nation, the police have become a tool for the harboring of crimes and mayhem being heaped upon innocent civilians. A spineless President would often compromise grievous crimes that have been committed through his usually baseless and unbiblical sermons at his Forkay Kloh Church amid sycophantic applause from a staged congregation. Surely, police preliminary and final reports would not contradict President Weah’s pseudo sermons to his politically-thirsty church-goers.
On the heels of the growing aura of insecurity and cloud of terror, the Legislature remains a toothless bulldog. Of course a hopeless population cannot rely on their elected leaders who have become Weah’s newfound scumbags.
With crucial general and presidential elections ahead, Weah’s stratagem in the wake of the latest reign of terror is intended to force the population into submission – where state-sponsored anarchists will roam the country like Charles Taylor did in 1997 following the quasi-disarmament, which saw his dreaded fighters terrorize villages and towns thus coercing eligible voters to cast their ballots for a courageous bandit like Charles Taylor. Weah along with his henchmen sees the October polls as a ‘do or die.’
The reason is simple. Six years of deliberate plunder and mindlessness deserve to continue – at least according to their reckoning. The true character of shameless bigots! But the ball is in the court of Liberians; choose ‘good’ over evil and liberate yourselves; or retain George Weah as a nitwit president along with his band of thieves to perpetuate the misery already widespread.
