MONROVIA – The sudden death of former Montserrado County District #9 Representative candidate and former President of the Customs Brokers Association, Ivan Tumbey, has triggered public concern and renewed calls for an official investigation into the circumstances surrounding his passing.
Tumbey reportedly collapsed while attending church services on Sunday, May 31, 2026. He was immediately rushed to the John F. Kennedy Medical Center in Monrovia, where medical authorities later pronounced him dead.
In the wake of the tragedy, Margibi County Senator Nathaniel F. McGill has publicly called on the government to launch a comprehensive investigation, citing what he described as conflicting accounts and growing controversy surrounding Tumbey’s death.
Writing on his official Facebook page, Senator McGill expressed condolences to the bereaved family and urged the relevant state institutions to undertake a thorough and impartial investigation to establish the facts surrounding the death.
“I extend my deepest condolences to the grieving family of Mr. Ivan Tumbey over his sudden death. Given the differing narratives and controversy surrounding his death, it is both prudent and important that the government conduct a thorough and impartial investigation to establish the facts and provide clarity to the public,” McGill stated.
McGill’s call has resonated with many Liberians who believe an independent inquiry could help dispel rumors and provide answers regarding the unexpected death of a man who was well known in both political and business circles.
However, several Liberians on social media have argued that the country’s laws already establish a clear legal process for investigating sudden or suspicious deaths through a coroner’s inquiry and, where necessary, an autopsy.
Under Section 7.1 of the Liberian Code of Laws Revised, any government official, medical practitioner, registrar, or other person who learns of a death has a legal duty to report the matter to the county coroner if there is reason to believe that the deceased died violently, was formerly healthy and died suddenly, or was discovered dead.
The law specifically states that a report should be made when a person “was formerly healthy and died suddenly,” a provision that some legal experts argue could apply in the case of Tumbey if questions remain regarding the cause of death.
The Code of Laws further outlines the responsibilities of the coroner once such a report is received. Section 7.2 requires the coroner to examine the body, document all material facts and circumstances surrounding the death, identify and interview witnesses, and convene a formal inquest with a jury of fifteen persons.
The purpose of the inquest is to gather testimony, establish the facts, and determine the circumstances under which the death occurred. Testimonies obtained during the proceedings must be reduced to writing and included in the coroner’s official report.
Additionally, Section 7.3 authorizes the coroner to secure the assistance of a medical practitioner if necessary, while Section 7.4 permits the performance of an autopsy when the cause of death cannot be determined through preliminary examination.
The provisions appear designed to ensure that deaths occurring under unusual, uncertain, or unexplained circumstances are subjected to independent review and scientific examination before conclusions are reached.
As public speculation continues, McGill’s intervention has brought renewed attention not only to the circumstances surrounding Tumbey’s death but also to the legal procedures available to establish the truth.
For now, neither the government nor health authorities have announced whether a formal coroner’s inquest or autopsy will be conducted. Nevertheless, the growing public interest and the legal framework outlined in Liberia’s statutes may increase pressure on the government to determine whether further investigation is warranted.
As family members, friends, and supporters mourn the loss of Ivan Tumbey, many are now looking to the relevant state institutions to provide answers and ensure that all questions surrounding his sudden death are addressed through the rule of law.
