MONROVIA – The Unity Party vehemently denounces the protest staged by certain members of the Margibi Chapter on Thursday, April 25, 2024, purportedly rejecting President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s appointments to the local government structure of the county.
In a press release issued today and signed by the National Assistant Secretary General for Press, Publicity, and Outreach, Lansana Pawenneh Fofana, it was reiterated that while every Liberian, including Unity Party members, has the right to seek redress on governance matters, it’s imperative to recognize that the constitution empowers the President with the authority to appoint and dismiss as deemed fit.
Earlier, on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, former Margibi District #4 Representative Ben Fofana and Unity Party Chairperson Cecelia Doe wrote to Atty Cornelia Kruah-Togbah, Minister of State for Presidential Affairs, urging a swift review of recent appointments announced on April 17, 2024, through the Executive Mansion’s platform.
In their correspondence, Fofana and Doe, representing the Unity Party’s Margibi Chapter, expressed concerns regarding the appointments and called for specific adjustments.
They underscored Margibi County’s tradition of ensuring that the superintendent and Development Officer appointments originate from different regions within the county to prevent concentration of power in one area.
Names initially announced and subsequently recommended for reconsideration included B. Lewis Kaine for County Development Officer, Togea Samu Zarwea for County Administrative Officer, and a correction for Samuel N. Y. Ketter as Township Commissioner for Cinta Township in Margibi County.
The letter proposed B. Lewis Kaine for County Development Officer, citing his Economics degree and extensive experience, while Togea Samu Zarwea, with over a decade of administrative experience and qualifications, was suggested for the role of County Administrative Officer.
The call for a review underscores the significance of adhering to established traditions and appointing qualified individuals to key positions, particularly in roles pivotal to Margibi County’s development and governance.
Despite the protests, the Unity Party reiterates its commitment to a unified and inclusive government, as promised during the 2023 elections. The Party trusts the wisdom of its Standard Bearer and President of Liberia in forming the government.
The Unity Party urges all members and Liberians with grievances to employ constructive dialogue and engagement to address concerns and foster positive change. It calls for refraining from activities aimed at undermining the presidency and the government while assuring continued engagement with the President’s office to fulfill the promise of inclusive governance.
Furthermore, the Unity Party calls on its members to unite in solidarity, supporting the President’s efforts to implement policies aimed at improving the lives of all Liberians.
