MARYLAND COUNTY, LIBERIA – A tragic accident over the weekend has left a 54-year-old man dead after he accidentally shot himself during a hunting expedition in the Gortoken area of Karluway and Barrobo Statutory Districts.
The victim, Benecesaw Teawea, an experienced hunter, set out with his 16-year-old son, Godtime Teewea, for a routine hunting trip along the riverbanks. However, the outing ended in tragedy when Teawea accidentally discharged his firearm, resulting in a fatal injury.
According to reports, the incident occurred when Teawea mistakenly identified a cassava snake as a constrictor. In his haste to catch his prey, he placed his single-barrel gun on the ground without ensuring it was in a safe position. After deciding to abandon the chase, he returned to retrieve the firearm. Unfortunately, as he picked it up, the muzzle was pointed towards him, and the gun, which had its trigger engaged, discharged, striking him in the abdomen.
Teawea was immediately rushed to a local health facility but was pronounced dead upon arrival. His death has left the Barrobo community in shock, as Teawea was well-known and respected for his hunting skills.
“This tragic incident highlights the critical importance of firearm safety, especially in outdoor environments,” local police stated in a warning to the public.
The Liberia National Police in Maryland County have launched an investigation into the incident to determine any further contributing factors. Local authorities are also reviewing the situation to prevent similar accidents in the future.
Authorities are urging residents of Barrobo Statutory District and surrounding areas to follow safety protocols when handling firearms, especially during hunting activities, to ensure such tragedies are avoided.
