DR. YARKPAWOLO TO LEAD TASKFORCE PROTECTING LIBERIA’S COASTAL AND WETLAND AREAS

Date:

MONROVIA – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has appointed Dr. Emmanuel K. Urey Yarkpawolo, Executive Director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), to head a newly established Taskforce focused on protecting Liberia’s beaches, waterways, and wetlands. This appointment comes as part of Executive Order No. 143, which aims to strengthen environmental protection efforts and combat the increasing threats of pollution, coastal erosion, and climate change.

In a statement issued by the Executive Mansion on February 24, 2025, President Boakai emphasized the urgency of addressing environmental degradation. He warned that the destruction of wetlands and waterways poses significant risks to both the environment and the livelihoods of Liberians. The Taskforce, under Dr. Yarkpawolo’s leadership, is expected to enforce environmental regulations and coordinate efforts to restore damaged areas.

The Liberia Land Authority’s Chairman will serve as co-chair of the Taskforce, alongside key government officials, including the Ministers of Justice, Internal Affairs, Public Works, Mines and Energy, and Information, Cultural Affairs, and Tourism. The Liberia National Police and local municipal authorities will also play active roles in supporting enforcement measures.

The Taskforce’s primary objectives include stopping illegal backfilling and destruction of wetlands, restoring degraded areas, and holding violators accountable through legal action. Additionally, the team will promote public awareness about the ecological and economic benefits of preserving coastal areas and work to reduce the use of harmful pesticides that threaten biodiversity.

Liberia’s commitment to wetland conservation dates back to 2003 when it became a signatory to the Ramsar Convention. Executive Order No. 143 strengthens these efforts by fostering inter-agency collaboration and improving enforcement strategies. The Taskforce will also work with the National Climate Change Steering Committee to ensure a comprehensive approach to environmental protection.

President Boakai has ordered the immediate implementation of the initiative and called on citizens, businesses, and local communities to support the Taskforce’s work. The Executive Mansion emphasized that protecting Liberia’s natural resources is vital to the nation’s long-term development and sustainability.
