MONROVIA, LIBERIA – Senator Momoh Cyrus, Chairperson of the Senate’s Committee on Security and Defense, has raised concerns over inadequate security measures at the Liberian Senate, warning that the lack of a robust security system is putting lawmakers at risk.
Speaking during the Senate’s regular session on Thursday, January 23, 2025, the Lofa County lawmaker stressed the urgent need to strengthen security at the Legislature to ensure the safety of all members. “Security here at the Senate is at its lowest. We need to beef up the security here for the safety of every lawmaker,” Senator Cyrus stated.
The Senator’s comments come in the wake of a recent fire outbreak at the Legislature, which raised alarm among Liberians about the absence of basic security infrastructure, such as CCTV cameras, at the seat of the first branch of government. More than a month into the investigation of the fire incident, no footage has emerged, as the building lacked surveillance systems capable of capturing the event.
Senator Cyrus urged the Senate’s leadership to act on the recommendations contained in a committee report currently under review, noting that its adoption could help address the pressing security issues. Meanwhile, the Senate has implemented preliminary security measures, including thorough searches of individuals entering the Senate wing of the Legislature. Sources indicate that additional measures, such as restrictions on carrying bags into the main chambers, will be rolled out in the coming weeks.
