MONROVIA, LIBERIA – Nyan D. Twayen Jr. and Jeremiah G. SokanJeremiah G. Sokan emerged victorious in the recent by-elections for the Nimba County Senatorial and Grand Gedeh County District 1 Representative seats, respectively. Their wins were officially certified today by the National Elections Commission (NEC), solidifying their positions as elected officials in Liberia’s political landscape.
The by-elections, which took place on April 23rd, 2024, were held to fill vacant seats in both counties. These elections were closely monitored as they provided voters with an opportunity to express their preferences and influence the course of their representation. The by-elections were necessitated by the elevation of then-Senator Jeremiah Kpan Koon to the Vice Presidency following the 2023 presidential and legislative elections, resulting in a vacancy in Nimba County. Additionally, the passing of Representative-elect Erol Madison Gwion, who had secured victory in Grand Gedeh County, led to the need for a by-election in that constituency.
Following the official certification by the NEC, both Twayen Jr. and Sokan expressed gratitude to their supporters and pledged to serve their constituents with integrity and dedication. Twayen Jr. highlighted his commitment to addressing the needs of Nimba County, focusing on issues such as infrastructure development, education, and healthcare. Similarly, Sokan emphasized his dedication to representing the people of Grand Gedeh County District 1, promising to prioritize development projects that will improve the lives of his constituents.
The certification of Twayen Jr. and Sokan’s victories not only confirms the outcome of the by-elections but also signals a new chapter in the political landscape of Nimba and Grand Gedeh counties. As they assume their roles, both elected officials face the task of delivering on their campaign promises and working diligently to fulfill the expectations of the people who voted them into office.
