MONROVIA – Liberian security forces are investigating two Liberians for allegedly duping two men said to be Japanese nationals.
The men were arrested last evening at the Roberts International Airport when they touch down from abroad.
Police sources say the arrests were made upon a tip-off from the Japanese.
The men were said to have been released later, pending their return to the police headquarters for further investigation; after their passports were confiscated.
Police sources said monies were not found on the suspects; contradicting earlier reports that the two Liberians entered the country with five suitcases filled with United States Dollars to the tune of US$1.6 million.
The information claimed the two had earlier informed security authorities they were guests of the vice president of Liberia, Jewel Howard Taylor, and that they wanted to use the presidential VIP arrival lounge at the airport to exit.
However, our sources said, Vice President Howard-Taylor who is out of the country denied knowing the suspects after being contacted.
There are no details on what happened, however, unofficial sources told Smart News that the two Liberians may have scooped funds out of the two Asians using some unorthodox arrangement before returning to the country.
Our sources revealed that the two Asians are in the country and they hinted at Liberian securities on the alleged fraud.
