MONROVIA – Just 19 weeks away from Liberia’s general election, United States ambassador accredited to Liberia, Michael A. McCarthy, has urged the Liberian media to hold accountable, politicians and officials of the George Weah administration.
Ambassador McCarthy, who made the call on Wednesday, at a media round-table, informed members of the media that although it is not an easy task, efforts of media practitioners to hold politicians and government officials accountable are critical to upholding Liberia’s democracy.
He further urged that media institutions and integrity organizations, keep politicians of all parties accountable to what he called their important “Declaration commitments.”
“Rather than simply reporting on the “horse race,” — ask politicians the tough questions about their platforms and records, shed light on policy inconsistencies, and remind the public what they stand to gain—or lose—in the lead up to October,” the U.S. envoy emphasized.
