HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONSIDERS URGING EXECUTIVE ACTION TO REMOVE AFL AND ERU OFFICERS FROM MINING COMPANY SITES

Date:

MONROVIA, LIBERIA – In an ongoing deliberation sparked by a communication from Grand Cape Mount County Electoral District 2 Representative Mohamed Dosii, the House of Representatives is contemplating advocating for the withdrawal of Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) Soldiers and Emergency Response Unit (ERU) Officers from mining company facilities across Liberia.

The discussion, initiated by concerns raised regarding the constitutionality of deploying armed forces to mining company sites in the absence of immediate threats, has garnered attention within the legislative body. Representatives are pushing for the reclamation of these officers to their respective barracks.

Representative Mohamed Dosii shared his firsthand observations during a recent visit to the Bea Mountain Mining Company in Konjor, Gola Konneh District, where he noted a significant presence of AFL and ERU personnel. Highlighting an incident on February 14 involving peaceful citizens gathering at the company gate to address labor concerns, Representative Dosii expressed dismay over the use of excessive force by the deployed security forces.

Speaker Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa underscored the House’s unwavering commitment to upholding the rights and welfare of Liberian citizens, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy towards any form of oppression or violations of constitutional rights.

As custodians of the people’s trust, the House of Representatives is dedicated to taking decisive action to protect the well-being of all Liberians. Aiming for a resolution that preserves constitutional principles while safeguarding citizens’ rights, the House is actively engaging in dialogue to ensure a harmonious balance between security measures and upholding fundamental liberties.

Representative Dosii’s communication has catalyzed a critical discourse within the House, highlighting the imperative of ensuring a just and equitable environment that respects the dignity and rights of all individuals involved.
