MONROVIA – A Liberian sports journalist, who recently made a passionate appeal to philanthropists, lovers of football, and institutions of goodwill, to fund his trip to give coverage to the African Cup of Nations (AFCON -2023), Augustus Auggie Audekina-Doe, is currently in the Ivory Coast covering the 34th edition of the AFCON, the Continent’s greatest soccer jamboree.
Audekina-Doe departed Liberia four days ago for the 2023 AFCON finals, with a message posted on his official Facebook handle, thanking those he referred to as his helpers.
Before his departure, the photojournalist launched an appeal lamenting that another opportunity for him to make it on the international stage to represent his country, Liberia, would have eluded him due to the lack of needed funding to facilitate his trip to the 2023 CAF TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations.
Sports journalists in Liberia, like their compatriots with other specialties in journalism, continue to encounter setbacks repeatedly due to the lack of institutional and individual financial stability to enable them to do their jobs adequately both on the local and international front.
At the time, Audekina-Doe appealed for financial assistance of US$500.00 to cover transportation, accommodations, feeding, and internet service.
Smart News Liberia (SNL) has not verified how much exactly the sports journalist received in aid,, but SNL has confirmed that he’s currently at the AFCON games, where surprises are being pulled by underdogs, who are giving the favorites of the tournament the run for their money.
