MONROVIA – The 3rd Convention of the National Democratic Coalition (NDC) has overwhelmingly endorsed the presidential candidacy of former vice president Joseph N. Boakai as the NDC choice of candidate in the October 2023 election.
In a convention that encouraged intense debate and descent as well as tolerance for opposing opinions, support for the presidential candidacy of incumbent President George M. Weah received no vote while support for the Unity Party Alliance presidential candidacy of Joseph N. Boakai received 100 percent of the votes by the delegates. The unanimous decision of the NDC Convention to stand with the rescue mission is therefore an indication that former Vice President Joseph Boakai is a leading contender in the presidential election of 2023.
Meeting at the New Creation Event Center on 3rd Street in the Sayetown community, the NDC Convention delegates also unanimously approved all the legislative aspirants who have expressed interest in contesting for seats in the Senate and the House of Representatives.
The convention delegates and observers included representatives from the two constituent NDC parties (the New DEAL Movement and the Free Democratic Party), heads of NDC county chapters, NDC legislators, NDC legislative aspirants, NDC affiliate organizations, and other invited guests.
The convention elected new leaders, evaluated the past performances of the NDC, took a critical national decision on the direction of presidential candidate support in election 2023, and set new short, medium and long term policies.
Among the new leaders that emerged from the NDC 3rd Convention are S. Ciapha Saah Gbollie, National Chairman, Thomas Kaydor, National Vice Chair for Administration, Cecelia N. Joe, National Vice Chair for Political and Interparty Affairs, Giamen Miamen, National Vice Chair for Mobilization and Operation, Harris Kromah, National Vice Chair for Research and Planning, Peal Nyenkan, National Secretary General, and Samuel S. Tamba, Treasurer.
The 3rd NDC Convention therefore brings to an end the Chairmanship of Alaric K. Tokpa who served in the leadership of the NDC for 12 years. In Absentia, Alaric Tokpa was elected to the Chairmanship of the NDC in 2011. Along with other political party leaders, his colleagues and comrades in the New DEAL Movement requested him to return from the United State to serve in the Chairmanship of the NDC.
In 2016, he resigned from the NDC Chairmanship but his colleagues and comrades, including the current Political Leader of the NDC, Dr. Nyaquoi Kargbo and the then Secretary General of the NDC, Mr. Abraham B. Mitchell prevailed on him to remain in the Chairmanship of the NDC.
Before he knocked down his heavy gavel to bring to close the 3rd National Convention of the NDC, Alaric Tokpa advised the incoming executives of the NDC to hold firmly to the social democratic philosophy and tradition of the NDC in the interest of the Liberian people and the National Democratic Coalition. The NDC is the only social democratic party in Liberia. The NDC supports and believes in the promotion of political freedom and economic justice in the interest of the poor masses. Press Release
