A Patriot’s Diary with Ekena Wesley
Politicians, despite their mixed coloration, are the most frustrating and annoying people. They are inherent liars! Truth is not in their DNA. They tell the masses what they want to hear. They parade with falsehood. It serves politicians a short-term relief. That’s just crazy, folks. Why should some ‘people’ choose to feed those who give them power with alright lies? Why should anyone be surprised?
These are folks who would promise to build bridges – where there are no rivers after all. They employ rhetoric to make the unforeseeable – foreseeable. Although they are knowingly not Jesus but would tell the electorates they have the ability to change ‘water’ into wine. Gush! Insane, isn’t it?
Liberia’s race car parked, Vice President, Chief Dr. Jewel Howard Taylor has of late reemerged with vitality. Hmm! Has she somersaulted from a coma? Barely a few months after the Coalition government came to power – insiders who reckoned Vice President Jewel Howard Taylor as an assertive force worked effortlessly behind the scenes to cower her into submission. Contrary to her pronouncement – that she would not be a parked race car, powerful cum untouchable supporters of President Weah amid his acquiescence deliberately pigeon-holed her into political and administrative silence.
Budgetary support became stifled just to make here irrelevant. She was recalled from a foreign trip amid an aura of disgrace and became confronted with disdain by the likes of former Minister of State for Presidential Affairs, Nathaniel McGill and a host of others. sadly, President Weah failed to halt his strayed dogs amid the semblance of utter disrespect. In the twinkle of our human complexity; Jewel Howard Taylor mobilized a number of women to offer prayers for the sanctioned cum disgraced Minister of State.
Tucked into a hospital bed in neighboring Ghana for months, Vice President, Jewel Howard Taylor, received the most demeaning courtesy befitting any Vice President – so to speak. But Vice President Jewel Howard Taylor thought enough was enough when she returned. Of course, she went haywire and fired vehemently left, right, and center about the obtaining misdeeds within the ruling establishment coupled with betrayals that had consumed the government in terms of promises made to the good people of Liberia. She had to swallow her outburst at some point but the retraction meant nothing after the news was initially captured.
The government continues to be at the center of massive corruption. Cluelessness is the psyche of an irresponsible regime. Hope is far from arriving. Liberia’s political commodity, the rice issue has resurfaced with no solution insight. The masses’ quest for survival continues to crumble. The populist leader does not have any clue whatsoever. He’s somewhere in Asia watching football – a game he’s gifted at.
As hopelessness meanders its way and misery continues amid a faintly embattled the population, all hands loosely seem on deck. A once silenced and cocooned Vice President has been called to duty to do the dirty work or perhaps damage control. What manner of control would Vice President Taylor exert when the boat had gone sinking? The Vice President has a tough job to defend the indefensible. It is impossible to produce cheese out of rock though.
Irrefutably, the Vice President’s statement that ‘hardship abounds’ was correct. Mind you, the hardship is because a dent of thieves is being allowed to thrive. Hardship has inundated the population so unimaginably. The once vocal opposition critics have been enveloped in a state of coma. Madam Vice President, an admission that there’s hardship is indicative of your recognition of the challenges we face as a nation. But Liberians, through their votes elected the CDC as opposed to the Unity Party (UP) because they were of the conviction the CDC would deliver where UP failed.
We cannot assure a group of people about being focused on development when the hardship they face cannot be curbed. That is precisely the first place to get started. A focused government is one that would prioritize the interest of the people. Civil servants are not getting paid but the citizenry is being assured that the government is focused. How does that add up, Madam Vice President? Our schools and hospitals are absolutely nothing to write home about. The CDC has failed miserably!
We cannot reckon a focused administration amid organized thievery. The people will not remember what Vice President Jewel Howard Taylor has said. The writing on the wall is dim. The political weather is ominous! The people are hungry. They are jobless! They have lost every ounce of trust. The government they passionately empowered at the ballot box is a disaster. The only focused government is one that would strive to put the interest of the people above every other consideration. Focus is relative; either the leaders are bent on lining their pockets or colonizing the aspirations of the masses. Perhaps some doomsday politics amid another year of election in the offing. Nobody is stupid here…
