LIBERIA: ‘RUNOFF BETWEEN CRIMINALS’ – TAA WONGBE SLAMS CDC, UP

Date:

MONROVIA – The winner of the Representative election for Nimba County’s 9th electoral District in the 10 October general election, Taa Wongbe, has slammed officials and supporters of the two political parties vying for the presidency in the country’s impending presidential runoff election, branding them as “criminals”.

Liberians go to the polls on 14 November, in a second round of voting for president, following the failure of either of the two top parties with the highest votes in the 10 October presidential election, the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) and former ruling Unity Party (UP), to have obtained the 50 percent plus one vote that is constitutionally required to win on the first ballot.

But as the CDC, with incumbent President George Weah as its presidential candidate and the main opposition UP having ex-Vice President Joseph Boakai as its standard bearer, face off in the runoff, Wongbe, a vocal Liberian politician, has averred that the 14 November election is basically between those he referred to as criminals.

On Wednesday, Wongbe termed those from the governing CDC as a bunch of incompetent and unsophisticated criminals fighting to retain state power, while he branded those from the former ruling UP as semi-competent, desperate, arrogant, and sophisticated criminals, who he said are hungry to reclaim the political leadership of the country.

He rebuked the CDC, its officials and supporters, classifying them as those having little governance experience, and if re-elected, will embezzle even petit cash.

For the folks in the UP, Wongbe, while admitting that they have a semblance of competence to govern, pointed out that if elected and return to state power, they will steal and embezzle billions of dollars and provide audit report with receipts and justifications.

Wongbe intoned that the CDC and the UP, which he inferred to being political parties harboring criminals, are the two groups between which Liberians have to make their choice when they go to the polls on 14 November, promising that he will on Thursday, 9 November 2023, make public his decision regarding both parties in the runoff.
