FORMER FINANCE MINISTER SAMUEL TWEAH REPORTEDLY ARRESTED AMID CORRUPTION ALLEGATIONS

Date:

MONROVIA, LIBERIA – Former Finance Minister Samuel D. Tweah Jr. has reportedly been arrested and is now in police custody in connection with a high-profile corruption investigation that dates back to the administration of former President George Weah. The alleged arrest, which occurred early Wednesday morning, September 25, 2024, could mark a pivotal moment in the pursuit of justice regarding the embezzlement of millions of dollars during Tweah’s tenure.

Tweah, who had been outside the country for an extended period, was reportedly taken into custody shortly after his arrival in Liberia at 1:00 a.m., according to police sources. Social media reports, particularly on Facebook, first circulated news of his alleged arrest, which was later confirmed by some police insiders. The former minister was reportedly apprehended by officers immediately upon landing.

He is said to be en route to Criminal Court ‘C,’ where he and other former officials from the Weah administration face allegations of corruption and financial mismanagement. The case focuses on accusations of embezzling public funds, a matter that has garnered widespread public interest as part of the current government’s broader anti-corruption drive.

However, the Liberia National Police has neither confirmed nor issued an official statement on the arrest of Mr. Tweah, leaving room for speculation as the public eagerly awaits more details on the case and the official charges.

Tweah, who served as Minister of Finance during George Weah’s presidency, has long been under investigation for his role in alleged financial misconduct. If confirmed, his arrest would represent a significant step toward holding former officials accountable for their actions while in office.

The case against Tweah and his co-accused is expected to intensify as authorities seek to uncover the full extent of the alleged corruption. Meanwhile, reactions from political observers and the general public reflect a desire for justice and accountability regarding the alleged misuse of state resources.

As the investigation continues, all eyes will be on the courts to determine the outcome of this high-profile case, which could set an important precedent for Liberia’s fight against corruption and public sector accountability.

Further developments in the case are anticipated, as Tweah and his co-accused prepare to face trial. Many await to see how this legal battle will influence Liberia’s political and economic landscape.
